Offer Introduction

In the 2018/2019 football season William Hill introduced a great new offer on selected football matches where they would pay out your bet as a winner if your team scored the 1st goal in the match, for anyone familiar with 2UP offered by Bet365 and Paddy Power (see guide here) the William Hill Golden Goal offer is like 1UP 😀 but only for the 1st goal.

The winnings are now capped at £25 for the 2019/20 season (plus you also get your stake back)  For example.  If you placed a bet on a selected match on a team at odds 2.0, if your team scores the 1st goal you would be paid out £50 (£25 stake and £25 winnings) even if your team does not go on to win the match!

Just one thing to note is that the original bet would appear on your statement as a loser and then a manual credit would be applied by William Hill after the match has finished.

Also worth checking your account to check your maximum winnings for this offer.  Although we have stated £25 above, there are some accounts getting £50 – £250.  The guide below will relate to the lower £25 so please bear this in mind when ready (the process remains the same regardless of your winnings cap, just the stakes would be different)

Terms To Note:

  • Min Odds:  There are no Minimum odds for this offer
  • Min Stake:  There is no Minimum stake for this offer
  • Max Stake:  The max stake is determined by the odds of you selection and winnings are capped at £25 for most users (although this can be as high as £250 for some so please check your personal cap)
  • Markets:  Match Odds only on William Hill for selected matches
  • Matches:  Selected matches only, check William Hill site for match details
  • Terms: Click Here for full terms of the offer
Recommended Strategy
  1. Choose a team you wish to back for the selected Golden Goal match. As a guide the team with the shortest odds will be more likely to score 1st
  2. Work out your back stake by using the following formula
Max Winnings / (back odds -1). g. if your team were odds 2.5 and your max winnings for the offer were £25 then you would use 25/(2.5-1) = 25/1.5 = Back stake £16.67.

We would advise rounding you stakes a little to the nearest £5 to try and protect your account as much as possible so in the example above we would recommend £15

3. Use the calculator here in normal mode and enter your back stake and back odds and lay odds to calculate the lay stake required at the exchange
4. Place your back and lay bets

Options If Your Team Goes 1-0 UP
  1. Take no action – accept a small QL if your team wins the match but a greater profit if they draw or lose – our preferred approach
  2. Lock In a profit – if your team goes 1-0 up then you can lock in a smaller profit than option 1 by using the early payout calculator on OddsMonkey here. If you do not have access to this calculator then you could cash out your lay bet at the exchange for a similar result

We personally use option 1 and accept the small QL and the higher profits if the team scoring 1st does not win the match but if you prefer more regular smaller profits then option 2 would be better suited to you.

It is also possible to lock in guaranteed smaller profits pre match, before a ball has been kicked by using a different market to lay your back bet off against.

Alternative Strategy

This is not my preferred option at all as the profit will be around £3-£4 per match (the profits are generally higher to lock in after a goal and a lot higher if taking no action, but if you prefer the slow and steady guaranteed profits then this is the guide for you.

  1. Choose a team you wish to back for the selected Golden Goal match. The team with the shortest odds will be more likely to score 1st
  2. Work out your back stake by using the following formula advised above, again we advise rounding stake to nearest £5

This is where this option differs from Strategy 1.  You would now look to lay your chosen team in the Next Goal market.  The odds for each team will be lower than the match odds market so you will be able to lay and lock in a small profit each match.

  1. Use the calculator here in normal mode and enter your back stake and back odds from William Hill and lay odds for your team in the Next Goal market at the exchange to calculate the lay stake required.
  2. Place your back and lay bets

Regardless of which team scores 1st (or even if the match finishes 0-0) you will have made a small profit on the match

Possible Outcomes

  • Match finishes 0-0. You lose you back bet at WH but win your lay bet at the exchange for a small profit
  • The other team score the 1st You lose you back bet at WH but win your lay bet at the exchange for a small profit
  • Your team scores the 1st You win your back bet at WH and lose your lay stake at the exchange for a small profit
Next Goal market is not currently available on Smarkets!!!
